Match Day in Delaware

03/24/2023

Match Day in Delaware
March 21, 2023

By Janice James-Webb, DNP candidate with the University of Delaware, APRN, Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner

Last Friday, March 17, 2023, was the big day when Delaware hospitals announced which new physicians have been matched with their hospitals for their physician residency. What an important week for our local hospitals with residency programs and the communities they serve!

Beebe Healthcare—This is the inaugural year for Beebe Healthcare’s Family Medicine residency program.  Dr. Joyce Robert announced on March 17th that 4 residents “matched” for placement at Beebe Healthcare. Three of the physicians graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM). One of the physicians is a Delaware resident and was a DIMER student.

Bayhealth — Bayhealth welcomed 8 Family Medicine residents, 3 General Surgery residents, 6 Emergency Medicine residents, and 13 Internal Medicine residents into their residency programs on Match Day. That is a total of 30 new physician residents for Bayhealth. This is the 3rd year for Bayhealth’s residency program.

ChristianaCare—ChristianaCare has 31 Graduate Medical Education programs and will welcome 100 residents and fellows into those 31 programs for 2023. ChristianaCare has trained thousands of physicians that practice locally and throughout the United States in the more than 100 years they have been supporting medical education here in Delaware.

Saint Francis Hospital—Saint Francis Hospital, part of Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic, welcomed 6 Family Medicine residents on Match Day. The three-year residency program will begin on July 1, 2023, and upon completion, the graduates will become board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM).

TidalHealth— TidalHealth welcomed 4 residents into its inaugural surgical residency program. The health system also announced the 10 physicians chosen for their internal medicine residency program. This is the 2nd year of the internal medicine residency program. In May, 2023 Tidalhealth will also add eight medical school students in their 3rd year of medical school to its inaugural Core Clinical Campus class.

Nemours Children’s Health—Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware has been matching residents for more than two decades. This year, Nemours will welcome 25 new general pediatric residents, 1 pediatric neurology resident, 2 pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation residents and 5 medical-pediatric residents.

Match Day calls for celebration not only for the residents who have matched with a hospital residency program to continue their quest to be a physician, but also to the communities where they complete this milestone. Studies show that more than 50% of physicians stay in the community where they trained. This is welcome news as Delaware, like the rest of the nation, is facing a health care provider shortage, particularly in the primary care setting. We applaud Delaware’s hospitals for undertaking these graduate medical education programs that bring more providers—over 170 this year alone—to train and hopefully stay to practice right here in Delaware!
