Penny Short - TidalHealth Nanticoke
President
Nanticoke Memorial Hospital is about to get healthier. In January 2020, Nanticoke will become an affiliate of Peninsula Regional Health System. “It’s not an acquisition, nor is it a merger,” explains Short. “It is a new partnership that allows us to expand and enrich our healthcare services we offer patients.”
Short was a key player in the deal, which took more than two years to complete. “As a small, community hospital, we wanted a partner with a culture that mirrors what we’ve created at Nanticoke,” Short says.
She shaped much of that culture over the 36 years she’s been with Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. She started as a nursing assistant, then became a registered nurse with an intensive care unit specialty. In the late 1990s, Short segued into hospital leadership, eventually becoming chief nursing officer and chief operating officer. In 2019, she was named president of Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, a title she will maintain after the Peninsula affiliation is completed.
“Peninsula’s team has been great, and while there have been anxiety points, we’re very excited about the changes this deal will bring to Nanticoke.” While she was mum about most of the details, Short did say that the hospital will be rebranded in April 2020, creating a new healthcare system for Sussex County.
